Fugly Enough?

When I saw the current challenge at Sisterhood Of Snarky Stampers:

I knew I had to play along.

I don't have a lot of ugly paper. I have a bunch of papers that came in 6x6 pads that aren't my favorite, but I wouldn't call them ugly. However, those are the first papers I pull out when I need to do a technique with a piece of patterned paper, because I really don't care if I destroy it.

So the other day, when I was playing with a technique from the last Online Card Class - Background Check, I ended up with a UFO that I decided was perfect for this challenge.

Here's my card, then I'll explain:

This started with that background green piece. It is a floral paper from a pack I had out (Prima, maybe?) and it was embossed and inked according to the lesson. I didn't love it, so it landed in the UFO pile.  But here it is, all resurrected and used.

Then, since I was sleep-deprived at the time (I was wide awake at 4:30 am, so ... I crafted!), I started looking around my desk and pulled together those orange and green papers. At this point I decided I'd passed two milestones. (1) I'd gone from "ugly" to "fugly", and (2) not only was the background paper fugly, the whole card was fugly. Always the over-achiever.

The horizontal strips were cut-offs from trimming the orange and green remnants. Then I spied a roll of orange washi tape. I'm telling you, neat people miss out on all this good inspiration!

Since I was attempting to follow the now-expired Mojo Monday sketch:

the bottom needed to be a different color. Since the trimmings didn't cover the whole thing: washi tape! This card was getting fuglier by the minute!

So far, all parts-is-parts were gleaned from my desk, so I went to the UFO file and pulled out the happy birthday banner. My only regret is I didn't bother to use something snarky. Hey, there's still time. I could make another card before the deadline. Could happen.

To finish out the expired sketch, I die-cut a circle from a remnant of white, and added an orange button, the only thing I had to leave my desk to get.

I may not win the ugly paper challenge, but I think I've nailed the fugly card. So proud.

This, people, is what happens when one is sleep-deprived and feeling ornery.

Thanks for stopping by!

Update: My card won Princess of Snark over at SoSS:

  1. I think you went from fugly to fun...and I can't think of a better way to clean up bits from your craft space than to create a card!
Yes, I am still selling my cards at KSC. It's been relatively slow, but perhaps picking up a little this past spring. I also started selling at the health food store (about 1.5 blocks away.) I easily walk from one store to the other. My card sales there are VERY slow, but the owner purchases my cards from me, so they are her property. I only agree to check from time-to-time to see if she needs to buy more OR to trade out cards of equal value (e.g. trading out Mother's Day/ Father's Day/graduation cards.)
How is your new Farmer's Market coming along? Are you selling cards there or just taking in income from your vendors?

  2. I can't decide what I loved more: your fugly card or your post! I about spit out my tea when I read the 'parts-is-parts'! I thought I was the only one on the planet that remembers that commercial and still uses the term! LOL!

  4. So funny!!! I about choked on my coffee when I read about the Washi tape...LOL
Fugly is in the eye of the beholder, or so they say....or something like that.....but still a good way to clean off the desk and some of the "not so pretty" paper from the stash. (don't we all have more than we will ever use?)
    Thanks for sharing

  9. But... I thought you liked orange and green! ;) You know, despite all the fugly elements, it's not such a bad card! Congratulations, you really should be proud. Thanks for joining the fun at the Sisterhood of Snarky Stampers!

  10. I'm so naive I had to google fugly. But I think you've pulled all the elements together so well that you've gone full circle away from the ugliness and ended up with a striking and fun card

  13. ok, i'd have to call this a fail b/c it's soooooooo not fugly!!! and whereas green & orange are not my faves... they kind of balance each other. plus you've TOTALLY done the layering thing AND the pattern combining thing. thus proving you CAN do it... you just don't like it when it's done. but i'm totally impressed!!! ♥
