I'm taking the new Online Card Class: CAS 3 - One-Layer Cards. But is this post about any of the homework I haven't done yet? Noooooooo. I got distracted and made something else!
During my recent crafty weekend, one of my fellow crafters and I played with Distress markers and water. I made a lot of pretty messes, but didn't actually trash any of it yet. While explaining it to my pal, I realized I'd crossed the beams and got the techniques mixed up and mushed together. That's not an entirely bad thing, but it's not what I'd intended to accomplish.
When I got home I sent her the links to the techniques, then I decided to try one myself. Thus, I bring you my one-layer watercolor card:
Yes, it's very white, BUT it worked as planned, so I was quite happy about it. You can follow along with Jennifer McGuire's video here.
I made a second one, too:
I think I like the second one the best.
In other news, it turns out the infamous Susan Raihala, Queen of CAS and Minimalist Extraordinaire, lives like eight miles from me, so I contacted her and we've had lunch a few times. I love meeting crafty peeps!!!! The other day we were talking about the relatively new One Layer Simplicity Challenge blog, and the current Just Add Water challenge, and I thought I'd try to play along. My only personal challenge is that whole one-layer thing.
I'm not a one-layer purist, mostly because I screw up so often. I prefer to work on a 1/4 sheet (actually 4x5 1/4) of card stock and then I only trash that much when I make a mess. I like to think that if my card front layer is totally flat, then I stick that onto a card base, it's still a one-layer card. Yeah, I guess I'm not a purist. But if I don't add any bling or washi tape or anything else, in my mind I'm soooooooo close to one-layer, I'm good with it.
For these cards, I wanted to use watercolor card stock, and it comes in 4 1/4 x 5 1/2, so I stuck that to a white card base. BUT IT IS FLAT! FLAT, I tell you! :)
So, I'm going to be bold and enter this in the One-Layer Simplicity Challenge - Just Add Water. I hope I'm not disqualified, but I'm okay if I am. I still had fun playing, and that's the whole point, right?
Thanks for stopping by!!!

I like them both. I was intrigued by Jennifer's video but haven't tried the technique yet.
ReplyDeleteNever, ever cross the beams! I like the 2nd one the best, too, but the first one is also very pretty.
ReplyDeleteThese are so simple but so dramatic at the same time. Brilliant idea.

FUN! Definitely casing this! Thanks for joining us at OLS!
ReplyDeleteOh, girl, your cards are so sensational and to my CAS- and OLC-loving eye, neither is flat!! You've created so much depth and dimension with your watercoloring behind the bold sediment. I could eat them with a spoon, I love them so much!! (And I'm so jealous that you live close to Susan and can see her often!!) Hugs, Darnell
ReplyDeleteThat's the thing I don't get about one layer. People do add washi tape or a bling and say it is one layer??? And I personally don't see a problem with adding your card front to a card as long as you don't pop it up. That's definitely a no-no. But what do I know? I know I love the look of CAS and one layer, but it makes me all twitchy to do it.
ReplyDeleteLove your cards. I don't know what you did to make them look nifty like that but I like it!
Congrats on being featured on the OLS challenge blog!
ReplyDeleteI immediately noticed that you used the bleeding technique that Jennifer showed and I love how your two cards turned out. Still need to try this myself. As for the OCC CAS3 class, I have the same problem you're experiencing, namely mixing up all those neat ideas and techniques. As always I have too many ideas and so little time. With the new set-up, I did manage to add 4 cards to the gallery (YAY), but so far I have only posted one on my blog (adding them to my new SCS gallery was quicker LOL). Also popped over to Susan's blog and I have to agree her work is awesome!
Yippee! I'm popping back to congratulate you on the well-deserved recognition from OLS, Leslie!! Hugs, Darnell
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your One-Layer Card recognition Leslie! Love the bright pops of color.
ReplyDeleteI love love love these cards!!! I really love the bold black sentiment with the bright colors softened just a touch with water. :) So awesome.
