Didn't Make The Cut

I don't know about you, but I make a lot of pretty trash. You know, those cards that seemed like a good idea at the time? Sometimes my ideas work, and sometimes not so much. I find it's the worst when I need to follow certain criteria for a DT post. When you're playing just for fun, you can change the rules, but you can't always do that for DT work.

So today I present you two cards that didn't make the cut for yesterday's ABNH sketch post

My first example is "not following the directions". Here's my card, then I'll explain:

I thought it was adorable, and I even used four different pieces of SU Specialty card stock (Slumber Party, I think) from the Heaplet! BONUS! Unfortunately we're collaborating with Lawn Fawn this month, not Paper Smooches, and I used a Paper Smooches bird, so FAIL!  I even used some coloring techniques I learned in the Online Card Classes: Copics for Card Makers. Sigh.

For my second "didn't make the cut" card, I thought I'd be clever and use all Hero Arts layering papers and a Lawn Fawn image, so I made this:

It all started with the dinosaur and some more Copic coloring. I chose to layer him on some Hero Arts green Artist papers, mostly because it had cool lines that looked like the ground. Plus, he's green.

Then I needed to figure out the background papers. I thought it would be too much to use more green, so I went with a piece of Artist papers in the Earth group and used the solid papers at the top. It technically follows the sketch, but I just wasn't feeling the love.

Neither of these will be trash, so no worries. But they didn't make the cut for the ABNH post. This also explains why it takes me so long to come up with my cards that do make it ... I make a bunch that don't.

That's enough airing of dirty laundry. Hmmm, as I typed that my brain thought "airing of grievances". Must be time to start working on Festivus cards, huh? :D NO WAY! 'Tisn't the season yet.

ABNH: October Sketch

Hi, there! I'm over at A Blog Named Hero today with this month's sketch. Here's one of the cards I've posted:

It's a fun sketch. Why not pop on over to ABNH and see what else I've cooked up?

Warm Winter Wishes

The new Simon Says Stamp Cold Hands, Warm Heart release is LIVE! So many fun sets for making your Winter cards this season. Check out all the goodness here.

Here's the sneak peek I posted on Instagram last week:

and the full reveal of my card:

I used the mug, steam, scarf, and sentiment images from the Winter Warmth stamp set.

To make this, I first used some white embossing paste with the Simon Says Stamp Falling Snow stencil over some Audrey Blue card stock. While that dried, I colored and cut out the mug and scarf from the set (I don't have the matching dies). I stuck the scarf to the front of the mug, then trimmed it to the mug's edges. I took the two ends and tucked them behind the mug in an attempt to make it look like the scarf was wrapped around the mug.

After the embossing paste was dry, I added the steam image, being careful to stamp around the embossing paste dots. Lastly, I put the blue panel on a white card base and added the sentiment banner.

Oh, the sentiment. You know how some people take a straight sentiment and bend it to their will to make a shape? Well, I bent this one to my will by straightening it. That explains why a few of the letters are a bit wonky.

So, I think you should go check out the new release. While you're at it, take some time to hop along with the Simon crew and see what amazing projects they've made. I'll bet you'll find at least one set you NEED.

Stuff I used: Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, and various grey Copics whose numbers are written down at home and I'm on the road ;/ will update later  --- and the following:

WOYWW - October 1, 2014

It's time once again for me to reveal the state of my craft desk, so I thought I'd play this week's What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday. Here she is in all her messy glory:

I was in the throes of creating for a few DT assignments, and I just couldn't make anything I liked. I'd huff in frustration, push the supplies aside, and try something else. Sometimes I'd re-use some of the materials, trying a different approach, but they all failed me. At one point I realized I had parts of four or five projects here, so I took the photo.

Let's do those numbers!

Clockwise, from the bottom left:

1. Cut up and punched paper that didn't make it to a card, and a die that I'd used to cut another piece of paper that didn't make it to the same card. I left the papers and pad out since #5 is the card in question, and you just never know.

2. Stamp used in failures 1a, 1b and 1c. I was too disgusted to clean it. It may still be there.

3. Punch used in #1.

4. Stamp set used in #17, coloring the balloons.

5. Partial card stuck to a non-stick craft sheet. Yes, I'm that good.

6. Top of my desk lamp, showing my cache of plastic thingies in reserve for use in my Glossy Accent bottle to keep it from clogging. I was a Girl Scout, and I'm always prepared.

7. My new (neat) collection of strips of white card stock I use for sentiments and stamping small images. They used to be under #11.

8. Tools of the trade.

9. My UFO box. This holds all my water color experiments, failed dry embossing experiments, cast-aside die-cuts, etc.

10. My collection of acrylic blocks, within easy reach of my paws. See? I'm organized, you just can't tell at first glance.

11. A piece of bubble wrap, colored with neon ink daubers (#13). All cards made with this failed to make it past Quality Control, but it's still wet, so I don't want to touch it.

12. Stamps and ink used to stamp the sentiment on #5. I wasn't done, so they weren't put away.

13. Neon paint daubers used in #11. I was glaring at them.

14. Ink and Copics used to color #17.

15. Distress ink and pieces of tape used in a previous failed attempt.

16. Ink used on the card stuck to the craft sheet in #5.

17. The image I'm coloring, plus another one stamped, ready to color, since I let the red bleed into the green and it was fugly. I had to re-do the star and cut it out.

That's it! A whooooole lot of frustration on one desk. I eventually did finish the card stuck to the non-stick craft mat (#5) and you'll see it later this month.
